Antony Gormley selects a new sculpture for Thimphu
A new sculpture by Hiroyuki Suzuki has been unveiled at the entrance of Thimphu, Bhutan. The work was selected following a competition judged by a panel including Antony Gormley.
The panel asked artists to imagine a place-making and place-identifying artwork that would also evoke what is most dear to the nation’s present and future, expressing in form and material something characteristic of Bhutan’s long evolution.
Speaking on their work, Suzuki has said: ‘I hope that this sculpture will continue to be loved by the people of Bhutan and the many people who visit this land for many years to come, and that it will contribute to the happiness of these people.’
Guided and assisted by Gormley and his team, the competition was managed by the Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development, Bhutan, and the sculpture was unveiled by Gormley and the Prime Minister of Bhutan on 4 October 2024.
