Broken Column - 15th Anniversary
15th February 2018 marks fifteen years since the installation of Broken Column. The 23 iron figures stand permanently in different locations around the city of Stavanger, Norway.
The individual bodies follow a topographical rule forming an imagined column. The human form is used as a measuring unit to mark the almost 50-metre difference in height in between the harbour and the Rogaland Museum of Fine Arts. The lowest figure stands below the surface of the water of Natvigs Minde in Stavanger’s port basin.
Each figure explores a new experience of the city, engaging with Stavanger’s history of trade, fishing and agriculture, whilst looking towards the city’s future. They lead us to question the relationships between nature and culture, sea, land and civilisation, the private and the public, the individual and society.
This permanent work continues to reflect upon people's lives within the city. The figures act as standing stones and silent witnesses to the everyday, now intrinsic to life in Stavanger.
