Opening Soon: Ukiyo-e in Play at Tokyo National Museum
The art of Japanese woodcut printing developed uniquely within the culture of the Edo period, giving rise to the vibrant and dynamic art form known as ukiyo-e. The term ‘ukiyo’ translates to ‘of the moment’ or ‘contemporary’, and ukiyo-e woodcuts vividly reflected the times and society of their era.
This exhibition showcases ‘contemporary’ ukiyo-e prints created by artists, designers and creators from various fields who have been inspired by the expressive potential of traditional woodcut printing. Acting as modern-day ‘eshi’ (artists), they collaborated with Adachi Institute’s carvers and printers to produce these works.
A series of new prints by Antony Gormley are included in the exhibition.
