SPACE OUT, ROPAC SALZBURG HALLE, AUSTRIA, 2015
29 July - 31 October 2015
Describing this exhibition, Gormley has said:
'What you see and how you feel are never the same. The feeling of being inside the body is without dimension. In this new articulation of the proposition of EXPANSION FIELD (2014), the relationship between what something feels like and its external appearance is tested. Each work is the result of a time becoming objectified in a frame. Each is the provisional boundary of a subjective experience of interior space - one that has no absolute dimension.
The exhibition SPACE OUT reinforces an impression that it is space itself which is being sculpted. The hermetic skin of the sculpture isolates a space in space that, while paradoxically becoming visible, is unseeable and unknowable.
Groups of expanded 'Tankers' are presented as families. Exhibited in this way, the systems and the comparative body postures that made up EXPANSION FIELD become more apparent and morphic distinctions between one position and another, as well as the evolution of their form through expansion, are highlighted.
The works are presented with a series of drawings that attempt to articulate - through flat fields of wash - the interrelationship of cells of space, both related to architecture and to the body: space that is both abstract and felt.
SPACE OUT identifies the distinction between recognisable human body positions and the expanding dimension of space at itself in the manner of an identity parade.'
