Material Culture aimed to continue the Hayward’s commitment to working with living artist and provided a context for the work of the young British artists who had been making headlines in shows from Minneapolis to Paris. It was designed to bring into conjunction works not normally seen together, to break down prevailing stylistic and generational categories and to encourage new interpretations of the works.
