Aerial (2023) is an attempt to activate space. Made of the highly reflective aluminium, it engages with light and space and energises its surroundings, not simply using the gallery as a location for sculpture. I have always admired Mondrian’s The Flowering Apple Tree and his Pier and Ocean series which allow an object to become space and space to become objectified. Aerial could be seen as a three-dimensional tribute to Mondrian’s intuition that art can be the means by which we re-enter space as a medium of extension rather than a condition in which we are distanced.
